A native of Hong Kong, I came to Stanford as a doctoral student in 1986 to study education and linguistics. I've lived and taught in Hong Kong, Japan, Canada, and the United States. My favorite subjects to teach are linguistics and Cantonese as a heritage or foreign language. In recent years, I've been studying how Cantonese heritage speakers maintain and develop Cantonese in the U.S. context and how to use technology to enhance foreign language teaching and learning.
