On Translating Japanese into Japanese: From Woodblock Print to Moveable Type
Speaker:

Michael Emmerich, Associate Professor, Department of Asian Languages and Cultures, University of California

This talk will consider reprints of pre-modern Japanese, woodblock-printed books in the modern form of the typeset, case-bound book, using this seemingly arcane topic to highlight certain elements of the process of translation that have gone largely unnoticed, and to argue in favour of a notion of translation as, in part, a plastic art.
