The New Great Game: China And South And Central Asia In The Era Of Reform
Speaker: Thomas Fingar, Stanford University, Shorenstein APARC Distinguished Scholar

China’s “rise” and ambitious plans to expand economic relationships with and among the countries of South and Central Asia have generated excitement, concern, and speculation about China’s goals and methods, but there has been little empirical work on what is actually happening, why it is happening in the way that it is, and how it has changed the region. The New Great Game is a notable exception.  Tom Fingar will discuss the findings and insights obtained from case studies that examine how China’s perceptions, priorities, and policies have interacted with those of other countries in the region and illustrate ways in which outcomes reflect accommodation to multiple interests.
