Speaker: Frederik Schodt, Writer and translator CEAS Japan Luncheon Series Winter 2008-09 Culture and Society in Contemporary Japan Sponsored by the Stanford Society of Fellows in Japanese Studies and the Center for East Asian Studies In this illustrated presentation, Schodt will focus on the pioneering artist, Osamu Tezuka (1928-1989) and his work, Tetsuwan Atomu, or Astro Boy, and show how Tezuka helped create the framework for the modern manga and anime industries. Befriended by Mr. Osamu, Schodt combines the perspectives of a cultural historian and a direct observer of manga/anime culture.
