The Center for East Asian Studies fellowship program for language study in East Asia offers support to Stanford undergraduates who study Chinese, Japanese, or Korean in a full-time, pre-approved (see a complete list of eligible programs via links under "2009 Pre-approved Programs"), accredited language study program abroad for a summer session, semester, or academic year.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Applicants must be Stanford undergraduate students.
  • Applicants must have completed at least first-year Chinese, Japanese
    or Korean language before the fellowship can be granted.
  • Preference will be given to East Asian Studies majors or minors and to students who have taken a minimum of two East Asian Studies content courses.

Award Benefits and Conditions:
The CEAS fellowships are intended to help cover tuition, living, and travel costs during the study abroad program. Students are responsible for costs that exceed the award amount.

  • 2009 Summer Program Award (minimum of 4 weeks): $4,000
  • 2009-2010 Semester Award: $4,000
  • 2009-2010 Academic Year Award (minimum of 8 months): $8,000

Application and Selection Process:

Applicants must apply to one of the pre-approved language programs on the list above and at the same time apply for the CEAS fellowship.

Applicants must submit all of the following before the deadline:

  • Completed application form
  • Official Stanford transcript
  • Statement of Purpose (essay of no more than 500 words)
  • Letter(s) of recommendation: 1 for summer/semester; 3 for academic year

Please note the following:

  • Applications will be judged on a combination of academic achievement, clarity and feasibility of goals, and relevance to future plans.
  • All students who study abroad in non-Stanford programs should notify the Bing Overseas Studies office regarding their plans.  Information regarding this process can be found here: http://bosp.stanford.edu/nonstanford/req_procedures.html
  • Students who need transfer credit for their program should contact BOSP (step 6 in this process) at the time they apply to CEAS for funding. 
  • Students who do not need transfer credit should contact BOSP after they have been awarded funding and accepted by their desired program (step 8 in this process)

DEADLINE:  February 13, 2009 (Friday) at Noon.  No exceptions.
