CEAS M.A. SUMMER INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

The Center for East Asian Studies offers an internship program for East Asian Studies M.A. candidates. This is an opportunity to live and work in your country of study, while advancing language skills, professional skills, and knowledge of local issues in that country. For students who envision finding work abroad after graduation, this is one way to begin making contacts for the future. CEAS has arranged internship positions with host organizations covering a spectrum of corporate, non-profit, media, educational, and government activities. CEAS provides a stipend to assist with airfare, housing, and living expenses.

Eligibility Requirements

• Applicants must be Stanford M.A. candidates in East Asian Studies during the internship period. (Graduating students must postpone graduation procedures until the internship ends, but may participate in commencement.)
• Applicants must have the necessary language abilities described in the internship job description. In most cases, host organizations request at least second-year Chinese, Japanese, or Korean language skills.
• Applicants must have taken one Contemporary China, Contemporary Japan, or Contemporary Korea course.

Award Benefits and Conditions (2007)

• The CEAS graduate student internship program provides a stipend of $3,500 for internships in China and Korea and $5,000 for internships in Japan to assist with airfare, housing, and living expenses. Students are responsible for expenses beyond this amount.
• Students are responsible for arranging their own accommodations abroad.
• Each intern must commit to full-time work (a minimum of 35 hours per week) for at least ten (10) weeks in China or Korea, or eight (8) weeks in Japan.
• The internship period will typically be between June 15 and September 15 with exact dates to be arranged between the host organization and the intern.
