Zarathustra: the Man and the Message

Stanley Insler, Professor, Yale University

Stanley Insler is Edward E. Salibury Professor of Sanskrit and Comparative Philology at Yale University, where he has taught since 1963. He has served as chair of the Department of Linguistics and as President of the American Oriental Society.

A specialist in Indic and Iranian studies, Professor Insler is the author of the definitive work The Gathas of Zarathustra: Text, Translation, Commentary (1975). His research interests range from Zarathustra and the history of Zoroastrianism to the Rigveda, the Buddhist canon, Indian narrative literature, and Silk Road studies. He is well known for his philological work on Avestan, Vedic, Sanskrit, Prakrit, and Pali.

Professor Insler will be introduced by Prof. Abbas Milani, Director of the new Iranian Studies Program at Stanford.
