When Half is Whole: Asian/American Identity Narratives

Stephen Murphy-Shigematsu, Consulting Professor, Stanford School of Medicine and Center for Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity

This presentation explores the intersection of Asia and America through the life stories of individuals whose lives are intimately connected to both worlds through their mixed heritages. The stories have been collected during over 30 years of research in the United States and Asia, with a particular focus on Japan, including Okinawa. The intimate stories reveal the complexity of identities that transcend borders of race, culture, and nation and show the possibilities of new kinds of hybrid and synergistic identities.
