From Sunshine State to Fog City: Asian American Comics in California

Symposium Scholar workshops on Asian American Comics featuring Professors Andrea Lunsford (Stanford), Timothy Yu (U.Wisc-Madison), Robin Valenza (U.Wisc-Madison), Aimee Bahng (Dartmouth) and Scott Bukatman, including discussions with artists Gene Luen Yang (American Born Chinese), Rina Ayuyang (Whirwind Wonderland) and Derek Kirk Kim (Mythomania, Eternal Smile).

From centuries-old Japanese woodblock prints and political cartoons to manga, superhero serials, comics journalism and webcomics—pictures and words have been brought together by visionary artists who saw the potential to tell stories of human civilization in ways not possible via text or image alone. The Graphic Narrative Project looks at the many manifestations of this medium.
