Ingredients for Success: Asian Entrepreneurs in the U.S. Market

Shirley Sun, Founder and CEO,Co-Founder and CEO, WinVivo
Yu-Kai Chou, Founder,

Our session on 4/05 focused on Asian entrepreneurs who were incubating their companies in Silicon Valley.  In this upcoming session, we hear from two entrepreneurs with Asia backgrounds who have recently launched ventures that are already turning in very impressive results in U.S. markets. How does Asia play a role in their current success?

WinVivo is a green healthcare company based in Silicon Valley that provides natural health and personal care products.  Their approach combines combines Asian thousand-year traditions of using botanicals for promoting health along with Western modern scientific research to formulate and validate the efficacy of the products.

Dr. Shirley Chen brings 12 years of experiences in global health product development and market expansion in the US, Asia, Europe and the Middle East along with IP protection and brand management.  Before becoming an entrepreneur, Shirley was a senior IP counsel at Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati.  She has also been a principal investigator in cancer biology research and drug development at SRI International, and carried out postdoctoral research of viruses in the laboratory of Nobel Laureate Dr. Harold E. Varmus at UCSF and at UC Berkeley.  She is a member of the State Bar of California, and she holds a JD from Santa Clara University and a PhD in biological chemistry from SUNY Stony Brook.

RewardMe is a mobile app that uses gaming mechanics to get customers addicted to brick-and-mortar businesses.  While apps like Groupon focus on one-time bargain hunters (people who may not come back until the store offers another 50% off), RewardMe aims to get customers to return often and refer their friends.  The service has already signed deals with [over 100 company/customers -- Richard's estimate] within a few months of launch and is closing an angel round of $600K funding.

Mr. Yu-Kai Chou is a serial entrepreneur in the geo-local rewards space and a sought-after lecturer/speaker on social media and gamification topics at places like Stanford, Google, Draper Richards Retreat,, and the Internet Marketing Conference.  RewardMe began as a project in his start-up company, Viralogy, and in the past he was a founder of FD Career and FD Network.  His startup was rated on Mashable as one of the Top 10 Social Networks for Gen-Ys.   Yu-kai is also a board advisor for a number of organizations and startup companies in California and Israel.  He graduated with a degree in International Economics from UCLA, specializing in China's Green Economy.
