Transitional Period Fraught with Contradictions: Chinese Literature, Culture and Thought from 1975 to 1982

The transformations of literature from the end of the Cultural Revolution to the beginning of the reform era were marked with conflict and complexity. They shaped the intellectual, cultural complexion of the 1980s and lay the groundwork for further orientation of writers and intellectuals in the 1990s. This talk will discuss the contradictory nature of literature, thought, and intellectual trends in this transitional period.
