New Research on Dating of Erlitou Site

Xuelian Zhang, Professor of Archaeology, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences

The Erlitou Site has been paid attention extensively on its belonging to the Shang or the Xia Dynasty since it was found. Up to now, the debate has been lasting almost half a century and involves over 600 papers. Among them, one typical argument is that the site belongs to the Xia Dynasty and probably the earliest part of the Xia. The Laboratory of Radiocarbon Dating of the Institute of Archaeology, CASS began its dating on the site in 1970s. In the Xia-Shang-Zhou Chronology Project, the site was researched as an important one during 1996 to 2000 and some advancement was made. The further research on the site was continued in the Research Program for Ancient Civilization since 2004 and a new result has been achieved now, which makes the site clearer, and the relationship between the site and the Xia or the origin of the Xia have to be re-recognized.
