MINORING IN EAST ASIAN STUDIES

The goal of the minor in East Asian Studies is to provide the student with a broad background in East Asian culture as a whole while allowing the student to focus on a geographical or temporal aspect of East Asia. A language component has been omitted on purpose. While the acquisition of an Asian language is, of course, important to the understanding of a culture, other avenues are available for a student to combine language study with area study. Students should examine the requirements for the major in East Asian Studies or the minor in Asian Languages to see if either of these programs of study might better meet their intellectual needs.

The minor in East Asian Studies may be designed from the following set of courses, for a total of six courses:

1.) Three gateway courses, one in each area. Please check the Stanford Bulletin for the approved gateway courses each year. The categories are:

Art, Literature and Religion

History

Contemporary Social Science

2. One undergraduate seminar and two other courses (from the courses listed each quarter as approved for East Asian Studies majors, including literature courses but excluding language courses)

All courses should be taken for a letter grade. Students should declare their minor no later than spring quarter of junior year, through AXESS.
